Notice is hereby given in accordance with § 2.2-4007.01 of the Code of Virginia that the Board of Dentistry intends to consider amending 18VAC60-21, Regulations Governing the Practice of Dentistry. The purpose of the proposed action is to implement Chapters 37 and 220 of the 2020 Acts of Assembly, which define a digital scan technician, as used in teledentistry, and require the board to promulgate regulations for the education and training of technicians to practice under the supervision of a dentist licensed in Virginia. Proposed amendments include (i) establishing requirements for a board-approved training program, (ii) specifying the responsibility of the dentist for the practice of teledentistry and training and supervision of a digital scan technician, (iii) voluntary registration of digital scan technicians, and (iv) other changes necessary to implement the provisions of Chapter 37 and 220.

The agency intends to hold a public hearing on the proposed action after publication in the Virginia Register.
